I’ve been working on this blog for so long that my last favourites post was in March! But now I’ve got all the annoying behind-the-scenes stuff out of the way and can get on with the actual writing, I’m looking forward to having one of these every month.
July has been ridiculously hot and sweaty, so when it comes to makeup I’ve been sticking to the basics. I’m currently loving lightweight bases, good eyebrows, and nude lips. Here are the products I’ve been using in July:
My holy grail sunscreen.
I don’t usually chat about skincare, as I have a fairly minimal routine and rarely try new products. But I’m really pleased I gave the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Comfort Cream SPF 50+* a go. It’s hard to find a decent suncream for my face that feels lightweight, doesn’t sting the eyes, and won’t break me out; yet somehow this one does all three. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who is sensitive to sunscreen. It honestly feels like a moisturiser!
Foundation sticks that survive the heatwave.
As much as I would like to spend hours doing my makeup every single day, I just don’t have that kind of time. For that reason, I’m a big fan of stick foundations for my everyday makeup routine. Lately I’ve been reaching for the L’Oreal Infallible Shaping Stick Foundation* in the shades 80, 100, and 220. I can draw a few stripes, blend out, and repeat if required. Unlike other stick foundations I’ve tried, this one stays put all day and can survive the summer. Read my full review here.
A few contour products.
I sculpt my face all year round, but I really love adding definition in the summer. After I’ve blended out my foundation, I’ll roughly draw around my face with the NYX Professional Makeup Wonder Stick in Light*. The colour has just the right amount of warmth, so it’s perfect to help any pale foundation match me a little better at this time of year. Then I’ll set everything with powder, and add a bit of the Focallure Sculpt Glow in 01* (review here) on my cheekbones so it’s not as obvious that I’ve been eating ice cream for breakfast.
Lip gloss that smells as good as it looks.
I’m not a big fan of traditional lipsticks in the warmer months – I prefer a low maintenance lip gloss that I can top-up on the go. The I Heart Revolution Lipgloss in Salted Caramel* is my favourite. It’s a pretty, light, warm-toned nude that’s perfect for minimal makeup days. It’s so pigmented that it adds a decent amount of colour in one swipe, and it smells incredible. I’ve also recently purchased the NYX Butter Gloss in Praline* which smells equally divine. It’s perfect for when I’m in the mood for something a bit darker but still somewhere on the nude spectrum.
All that glitters… is probably on my eyes.
I’ve been neglecting my eyeshadow palette collection over July, as I just don’t have the energy to create a proper “look” during the recent heatwave. Instead, I’ve been layering glitter products in different colours and sizes to create sparkle on my eyes. I tend to start with a liquid glitter shadow like the Rimmel Glitter Gel 100 Frose* , the Collection Glam Crystals Glitter Gel Eyeliner in Funk 3*, or the Lottie London Eye Foil in Shady* depending on the colour I want.
After that, I like to top it with a pressed glitter to add more texture and seal the look. I’ve been loving the Kiko Metallic Eyeshadow in 01 Sparkling Holiday (limited edition, sorry folks) for a pure gold colour, and the Colourpop Supershock Shadow in Ladybird for more of a silver/champagne sheen.
That pretty much sums up my look for July: a sweat-proof base, with glitter on my eyes and a nude lip. The above photo of my eye was taken on my 29th birthday (oh yeah, that’s another thing that happened last month).
